Fulldome
Fulldome is a powerful medium. It’s challenging, too, particularly in the Museum of Science’s planetarium, which featured concentric seating (the rows are circles around the center of the theater), which means that we produced shows for audiences whose members face in all directions. Blessed with a talented team, I led efforts to create three pre-recorded shows and extensive live programming. All three shows benefitted from music composition by Sheldon Mirowitz and sound engineering by Berred Ouelette, who nicely rounded out the team.
As the inaugural show after a $10 million renovation and the associated jump to digital fulldome technology, Undiscovered Worlds: The Search Beyond our Sun was a high-stakes venture, a high wire act with no safety net. Co-written with Alan Lightman, it was a great success with audiences, won in its category at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festivals Science Media Awards, and was nominated for or won other awards, as well.
You can observe the team’s technical skill development in the second and third shows (Moons: Worlds of Mystery and From Dream to Discovery), and our continued excellence in engaging, accurate and educational science storytelling in all three. The music and editing of all three shows were fantastic, making them all worthy of the awards and nominations they received.
